Fintech funding hits new heights

By Teamspirit on Tuesday, 24 April 2018

We might be barely out of Q1, but 2018 is shaping up to be a big year for fintech, with a record $5.4bn of funding already secured for fintech firms globally.

The figure comes from CB Insights’ Global Fintech Report Q1 2018, which recorded 323 deals totalling more than $5bn since January. The biggest surprise came from South America, which has already surpassed its funding total for 2017, while the US, Asia and Europe continued to post strong numbers.

The total was in part down to a record number of big money moves, with 12 deals worth more than $100m each spread across four continents.

As firm believers in the potential of fintech, we’re excited to see more and more backers put their money behind the sector. As it continues its transition from challenger to mainstream, we expect to see more big players follow the lead of Santander, which greenlit three new fintech acquisitions since January.
